Above our heads is a double pointed vault, decorated with wooden carvings, painted with golden lilies on an azure field; underfoot is a floor paved with white and black marble slabs. A few steps away from us there is a huge pillar, then another, a third - in total there are seven such pillars throughout the hall, serving as a line of support for the heels of the double arch. Around the first four pillars are merchants' shops, sparkling with glassware and tinsel; around the other three are worn oak benches, polished by the short, wide trousers of litigants and the robes of attorneys.
