Transmission Mode Person-to-person transmission of Giardia lamblia occurs by transfer of cysts present in the feces of an infected individual, through the hand-to-mouth mechanism. It is likely that asymptomatic infected people (a very common situation) are more important in the transmission of the agent than those people who have diarrhea (symptomatic infection)2-5. A Transmission occurs when water is contaminated with feces containing the cyst, and less frequently, by food contaminated with feces. Giardia is not transmitted through blood3-6. It can also be transmitted by placing something in your mouth that came into contact with contaminated feces; ingestion of water contaminated by Giardia; water from swimming pools, lakes, rivers, fountains, bathtubs, water tanks that may be contaminated by feces of infected animals and/or humans or through the ingestion of undercooked foods contaminated by Giardia5-7.
