En la teoría literaria del siglo xx, el formalismo ruso representa el primer esfuerzo por la constitución de un campo autónomo de problemas, conceptos y métodos para el estudio de la literatura. En este sentido, puede decirse que de alguna manera supone una revitalización de la vieja tradición clásica y clasicista representada por la poética y la retórica. En efecto, la crítica literaria rusa del siglo xix manifiesta una preocupación por el aspecto político-social de la literatura. Representan bien esta forma de crítica Vissarion Bielinski (1811-1848) y sus seguidores: Nikolai Chernishevski (1828-1889)
